Information Retrieval and the Semantic Web

Abstract

Information retrieval technology has been central to the success of the Web. For semantic web documents or annotations to have an impact, they will have to be compatible with Web based indexing and retrieval technology. We discuss some of the underlying problems and issues central to extending information retrieval systems to handle annotations in semantic web languages. We also describe three prototype systems that we have implemented to explore these ideas.

Introduction
Information retrieval technology has been central to the success of the Web. Web based indexing and search systems such as Google and Yahoo have profoundly changed the way we access information. For the semantic web technologies [4][5] to have an impact, they will have to be compatible with Web search engines and information retrieval technology in general. We discuss several approaches to using information retrieval systems with both semantic web documents and with text documents that have semantic web annotations.

The Insider’s Guide to the Grand Canyon

Where Is the Grand Canyon?
Grand Canyon National Park is in Northern Arizona.

What Side Can I See it From?
Grand Canyon South Rim and West Rim (a.k.a. “Grand Canyon West”) are open year-round. Grand Canyon North Rim is open from mid-May through mid-October.

How Do I Find it on a Map?
Your Grand Canyon Top Tours Brochure has one. You can also find several excellent maps on our website. To find the Grand Canyon’s location on MapQuest or Yahoo!, use Zip code “86023” or “Grand Canyon, Arizona” for Grand Canyon South Rim. You can also use Airport Locator Code “GCN.” In our experience, mapping Grand Canyon North Rim is a bit tricky. We’ve found it best to use Jacob Lake, Arizona as your reference point, and from there, the park is 60 miles South. For Grand Canyon West (a.k.a. the “West Rim,”) Meadview, Arizona seems to be the closest mappable location.

Standalone WEBppliance (LS) DNS Host Configuration Guide

Introduction
Purpose
This document describes the technical details of Domain Name System (DNS) management for a reseller using Ensim WEBppliance software. It gives a step-by-step example to shed light on this complex topic.

Overview
This document describes the technical details you should be aware of when using Ensim’s Appliance Admin control panel to manage DNS. We will assume that you have access to a freshly installed WEBppliance and have not created any sites. If you have already created sites, please contact your hosting provider for further assistance.

DNS is an unforgiving protocol. Even a small error can cause a domain to disappear for days or weeks at a time. To avoid this, you should have the DNS “bible” — the O’Reilly DNS and Bind Book: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/dns3/ — at your side. Please see the “For Further Reading” section at the end of this document for more tutorial information on DNS.

QMap Guide

Objective
Build a guide to Stockholm where we need to present information with text and images. Our main task is to make the information accessible with a large number of devices based on the devices capabilities. A phone that only supports black and white images and WML should get something while a more capable phone should get more. The application is based on WML/XHTML with server side support to adapt the
content. We used WURFL PHP library to detect device capabilities instead of using XSLT over UAProf in this project.
