Object-Oriented Programming with Visual Basic .NET

Visual Basic .NET and Object-Oriented Programming
Visual Basic .NET is a fully object-oriented programming language, which means it supports the four basic tenets of object-oriented programming: abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism. We have already conceptualized many of these object-oriented concepts by just looking at the objects that surround us in our everyday lives. Let’s look more closely at these terms and see what they actually mean and what they do for developers of object-oriented software.

Abstraction
A radio has a tuner, an antenna, a volume control, and an on/off switch. To use it, you don’t need to know that the antenna captures radio frequency signals, converts them to electrical signals, and then boosts their strength via a high-frequency amplification circuit. Nor do you need to know how the resulting current is filtered, boosted, and finally converted into sound. You merely turn on the radio, tune in the desired station, and listen. The intrinsic details are invisible. This feature is great because now everyone can use a radio, not just people with technical know-how. Hiring a consultant to come to your home every time you wanted to listen to the radio would become awfully expensive. In other words, you can say that the radio is an object that was designed to hide its complexity. [...]

Adobe Photoshop Panel Developer’s Guide

Introduction
Adobe ® Photoshop ® CS4 software has added a new feature to allow SWF files to run as a panel inside the digital imaging program. This document describes the process of creating such a panel. The Adobe Photoshop interface can be overwhelming for both new and seasoned users of the digital imaging program. The Adobe Photoshop Panel Developer’s Guide will teach developers how to develop custom panels to run within Adobe Photoshop CS4. The developer community can develop panels to allow other users to use for their own custom needs. Some ideas of this concept include:

  • Workflow Panels: Developers can create custom panels meeting the workflow of any work environment.
  • Video Training: Developers can create video feeds that would teach others how to use Adobe Photoshop.
  • Browsing Exchange: Developers can create a custom browser to exchange files and data from web sites, photo galleries, databases and load them directly into Adobe Photoshop.
  • Peer-to-Peer Exchange: Developers can interact with other developers to communicate and exchange ideas and data.

Who Should Read This?
The Adobe Photoshop Panel Developer’s Guide is geared towards those with experience in one or more of the following groups:

  • Adobe Flash
  • Adobe Flex Builder
  • Adobe Photoshop with some programming background
  • Object-Oriented Programming such as Java or C++
  • Scripting such as JavaScript, AppleScript, or ActionScript

For those who are experienced with Adobe Photoshop but have little exposure to programming, please refer to the Adobe Photoshop Developer Center. For those who do not fall into any of the groups, please refer to the Links section for other listed tutorials, resources, and books to prepare for the Adobe Photoshop Panel Developer’s Guide.

A Guide to the Python Universe for ESRI Users

Abstract
ArcGIS 9 will provide scripting capabilities with the Geoprocessing Framework. This will allow scripting languages like Python to automate tasks with ArcGIS. Python has historically provided many other opportunities for scripting GIS. This paper describes an overview of the GIS tools available for use scripting with Python. Functionality such as working with
grids, image manipulation, reading and writing shapefiles, delivering maps to the Web, and communicating with the Microsoft TerraServer are described. An overview will give the reader more tools in his/her toolbox to integrate with existing software.

Introduction
Scripting in ESRI environments historically has belonged to two schools of thought. First is the AML (Arc Macro Language) model, which wears its PrimOS heritage on its sleeve. You pipe output to files, data handling is file-system and directory-based, and code is very linear in nature. The other school is demonstrated in Avenue, which wears a Smalltalk badge. Object.request is the name of the game, things don’t have to be linear, I/O is sometimes a struggle, and integrating with other programs is a mixed-bag. Both are custom languages that have their own dark, nasty corners.

Digi Python Programming Guide

Purpose of this Guide
This guide introduces the Python programming language by showing how to create and run a simple Python program. It describes how to load and run Python programs onto Digi devices, either through the command-line or Web user interfaces. It reviews Python modules, particularly those modules with Digi-specific behavior. Several sample Python programs are included on the Software and Documentation CD. This guide describes how to run the executable programs and describes program files.

What Is Python?
Python is a dynamic, object-oriented language that can be used for developing a wide range of software applications, from simple programs to more complex embedded applications. It includes extensive libraries and works well with other languages. A true open-source language, Python runs on a wide range of operating systems, such as Windows, Linux/Unix, Mac OS X, OS/2, Amiga, Palm Handhelds, and Nokia mobile phones. Python has also been ported to Java and .NET virtual machines.

HIBERNATE – Relational Persistence for Idiomatic Java

Preface

Working with object-oriented software and a relational database can be cumbersome and time consuming in today’s enterprise environments. Hibernate is an object/relational mapping tool for Java environments. The term object/relational mapping (ORM) refers to the technique of mapping a data representation from an object model to a relational data model with a SQL-based schema.

Hibernate not only takes care of the mapping from Java classes to database tables (and from Java data types to SQL data types), but also provides data query and retrieval facilities and can significantly reduce development time otherwise spent with manual data handling in SQL and JDBC.

Hibernates goal is to relieve the developer from 95 percent of common data persistence related programming tasks. Hibernate may not be the best solution for data-centric applications that only use stored-procedures to implement the business logic in the database, it is most useful with object-oriented domain models and business logic in the Java-based middle-tier. However, Hibernate can certainly help you to remove or encapsulate vendor-specific SQL code and will help with the common task of result set translation from a tabular representation to a graph of objects.
