These chips may be small, but just one infected RFID tag is capable of disrupting an entire system with disastrous consequences. Take, for example, the airport at Las Vegas, which handles two million items of luggage per month. As from May 2006, RFID tags will be attached to cases to speed up the baggage handling process. If someone intentionally attaches an infected RFID tag to his case, the entire system will be thrown into disarray. As soon as the case is scanned, the infected tag will be able to invade the airport’s central baggage database and all cases subsequently checked in will also become infected. On arrival at other airports, these cases will be scanned again and within 24 hours, hundreds of airports throughout the world could be infected. The perfect solution for smugglers and terrorists wanting to send suspicious luggage across the world without being noticed.

Whenever you stop using your MacBook, wait a few moments to let the hard disk and any optical disc (such as a CD or DVD) in your drive stop spinning before you transport the computer. Avoid jostling or bumping your MacBook while discs are spinning.

Note: Your MacBook uses Sudden Motion Sensor technology to help protect the hard disk if the computer is dropped or shaken. See “Understanding Sudden Motion Sensor” on page 74 for more information.

When you use your MacBook or charge its battery, it is normal for the bottom of the case to get warm. For prolonged use, place your MacBook on a flat, stable surface. The bottom of the case is raised slightly to allow airflow that keeps the unit within normal operating temperatures.

Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) is a communications technology that uses the internet to transfer voice signals in the form of bits and bytes. It delivers these bits and bytes to a specified internet address rather than a telephone number. It’s easier to think of it as being like sending e-mail from one computer to another, but in real time and using voice instead of text. The technology that most likely runs your existing switchboard and phones is a traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN) service. VoIP’s advantage over this is its ability to combine several services, such as voice mail, video, e-mail and conferencing. This instantly increases your ability to collaborate and can result in higher productivity.
