How to Setup Multiple Screens under Linux Using Xinerama

Overview
This how to document describes a method of using Xcinerama to enable display of presentations and other documentation under Linux.

How to Setup Multiple Screens under Linux
While researching the Internet for a some idea of how to display Impress presentations using two differenent screens, I discovered a webpage that described how to use Xinerama to do this in Linux. I cannot find the name of the originator but acknowlege my debt to his work.

I have since tested the procedure using my laptop with an external monitor and it works well, but is somewhat limited.

This method uses the “Normal” slide view and two displays of different resolutions. The control screen displays the entire OpenOffice.org Impress display, and the projector displays an enlargement of just the slide portion of the window. This permits previewing the available slides and then selecting the one for display by double-clicking it.

Create headlines that demand attention

The 3D effects in Adobe Illustrator CS are a great way to add eyepopping dimension to headline text. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how extrude a 2D object, add a bevel, and adjust the lighting. If you’ve never worked with 3D objects before, you will find these controls easy to master. If you’re an old hand at the 3D process, you can enjoy the fact that now you don’t have to leave Illustrator to render in 3D.

1. Extrude the headline.
Extrusion adds depth to a 2D object by extending it along its z axis. To extrude your headline, select the type object, and choose Effect > 3D > Extrude & Bevel. In the Extrude & Bevel section of the dialog box, enter a value for Extrusion Depth. Also make sure the Extrude Cap On button is selected (this make the headline appear solid). Then click OK.

Photoshop Layers Tutorial

Creating a layered document
Layers are controlled through the Layers palette in Photoshop. In this palette, you can see each layer along with a thumbnail showing the contents of the layer. At the bottom of the palette you’ll see a little “New” icon. Click on this icon to add a layer to your document:

You can now draw on your new layer, and it will not affect the layers below it, just as if it was a separate sheet of plastic on top of the image. Before working on a layer, make sure you click on the layer you want to work with in the Layers palette first, so that it becomes active. The currently active layer is shown highlighted in blue above (Layer 1).
