What is PayPal?
PayPal is an American-based system that allows any business or consumer with an email address to securely, conveniently, and cost-effectively send and receive payments online. Their network builds on the existing financial infrastructure of bank accounts and credit cards to create a global, real-time payment solution. They deliver a product ideally suited for small businesses, online traders, individuals and others currently underserved by traditional payment mechanisms.

PayPal Merchant Gift Certificates let you sell personalized gift certificates on you website. As soon as you create and publish Buy Gift Certificate buttons, customers and visitors can begin purchasing and redeeming your gift certificates.

Merchant gift certificates can be redeemed only for merchandise or services that you sell online. eBay Gift Certificates are sold on eBay.com and can be redeemed only for auction items and merchandise sold on eBay.

N O T E : Gift certficates that you create and sell by using Merchant Gift Certificates are not redeemable for your eBay listings.

The PayPal Sandbox is a self-contained environment within which you can prototype and test PayPal features and APIs. The PayPal Sandbox is an almost identical copy of the live PayPal website. Its purpose is to give developers a shielded environment for testing and integration purposes and to help avoid problems that might occur while testing PayPal integration solutions on the live site. Before moving any PayPal-based application into production, you should test the application in the Sandbox to ensure that it functions as you intend and within the guidelines and standards set forth by the PayPal Developer Network (PDN).

Prerequisites

• fair knowledge of Java (or at least object oriented programming concepts in another language)
• knowledge of HTML
• basics of web applications (preferably J2EE)
• Fair knowledge of SQL (SELECT, stored procedures, triggers)
• knowledge of source control (e.g. Subversion) is a plus

Minimum Laptop Requirements

• dual core processor
• 2Gb RAM
• Linux/Windows OS (MacOS is strongly advised against)
• installed latest community edition of Openbravo ERP (if not, a virtual appliance will be provided on the course) – Postgres database should be used since all materials and solutions are based on it.

01 – Welcome and Introduction
This first session will welcome you to the course and give you an overview and the schedule of the following weeks topics.

Use Buy Now buttons to accept single-item purchase payments. A Buy Now button can sell one or more units of a single item. Make additional Buy Now buttons for additional items that you want to sell.

You can create Buy Now buttons that you add to your website by using a tool on the PayPal website, or you can write the HTML code for Buy Now buttons manually. You can create buttons with limited functionality before you create your PayPal account or with JavaScript disabled in your browser.

Before you get started

To setup your store and process transactions you will need the following:

1. Google Checkout account
2. Image hosting service, such as Picasa, PhotoBucket, Google Page Creator, or your ISP

Adding items and categories

After you have logged in to your store as an administrator please use this QuickStart Guide procedure to add merchandise, add/modify categories and to manage your store.

Linking to your store

Linking to Store URL:
You may decide to keep the store as a standalone web site, accessible from a URL such as
http://mystorespace.com/storefront/YourStoreName/, or you may link your store to another domain.

Alternatively, if your business already has a website, you may embed your store right into it by inserting a snippet of HTML code. This sample code fragment below will plug our demo store into any website.
