PayPal Setup Guide
What is PayPal?
PayPal is an American-based system that allows any business or consumer with an email address to securely, conveniently, and cost-effectively send and receive payments online. Their network builds on the existing financial infrastructure of bank accounts and credit cards to create a global, real-time payment solution. They deliver a product ideally suited for small businesses, online traders, individuals and others currently underserved by traditional payment mechanisms.
We recommend that you set up a PayPal account for your ShopFlare because:
- it is quick and simple to set up;
- many people in the world already have PayPal accounts, so your store is talking to them in their language;
- it uses SSL technology so people paying for goods purchased in your store via PayPal can be assured their transaction cannotbe ‘hi-jacked’;
- you don’t need to have an existing credit card merchant account;
- it is free to open an account and send money using PayPal. Personal accounts can send and receive money for free. They do charge modest (their words) fees for their Premier and Business account members to receive payments, but you would expect that in exchange for being able to expand the services you can offer your own customers.
How does it work?
In a nutshell, the way it works is as follows:
- Somebody goes to your website (Widgets Ltd) and buys a Widget;
- They go to your checkout, select PayPal as their payment method and click Continue;
- They are taken to a secure page on the PayPal website that mentions that PayPal is the authorised payment processor forpaypal@widgets.ltd and asks the user to enter his personal, address and credit card details to pay for the goods;
- They verify the user’s card, take the amount from the card and put it into your PayPal account;
- After the transaction is complete the user clicks Continue and is taken back to a confirmation page on your website where hecan shop some more or leave;
- You receive an e-mail from PayPal telling you somebody has just paid for a product;
- You log into your PayPal account and transfer the money from your PayPal account into your regular bank account (if youwant to, but you can leave the money in there to pay for goods and services yourself).
It really isn’t any more complicated than that. There are different services you can subscribe to which make the procedure slightly different in different scenarios, but that, in essence, is how it works.
