Newbie Guide to the Yahoo! Group
C h a p te r 1 : Navigating the Home Page & Locating Important Info
Chapter Highlights:
- Understanding the Home Page Contents
- Navigating the Navigation
- Important Links from the Home Page
You can also go to the group page right from any group email, which we’ll cover in the chapter about group emails.
From the home page of our group, you can access every tool available through the group, hit important team links, and check out the latest posts. There’s a lot of information crammed into this page, though, so making sense of it can be frustrating at first. Let’s break it down.
From the Top
Beginning at the top of the page, you’ll find the following items. We’ll quickly cover what each item is there for (even the stuff that really has nothing to do with the group, but does take up space and make things more confusing if you don’t know why they’re there) – but we won’t go in-depth. The items that we deal with often as a group will be covered fully on its own.
The top of the page, or the header, contains links and functions that are all about Yahoo! and your own profile. You won’t be using these for group stuff, but they might come in handy for personal use.
Groups Toolbar
Going right past the banner ad, you’ll see the groups toolbar next. In this toolbar you’ll see your profile name and email address, your position in the group (most will show Member), edit your personal settings related to how you receive group messages and what information is supplied, start your own new Yahoo! group, and see a list of all Yahoo! groups you’re a member of.
You can also use the Search bar to look for other groups you might be interested in becoming a member of also.
Group Content
Looking to the right of the Group Menu, you’ll see the actual content of the home page. Recent activity is automatically updated based on the activity in our group – you can see how many new members (to the Yahoo! Group, not the team itself necessarily) we’ve had in the last week, how many new links have been added to the database, how many emails (though they’re called messages, when you post a message it’s sent to the team as an email so it’s easier to think of them as email) have gone out, and how many new databases and files have been added.
Right next in line is our group description. This helps us stay focused on our mission or goal, and it also offers members a chance to read the welcome letter. Even if you’re not a newbie, it’s good to freshen up on the welcome letter from time-to-time.
Next down is the Important Group Links section. Listed here are the links that you really should be aware of, and definitely make use of. Simply going through these links and staying up-to-date on what’s happening answers a lot of questions many of us have.
As the need arises or a new opportunity presents itself, special news is added next. This is updated whenever something new is going on, so it’s always a good idea to take a peek.
Ever wonder who is running the Yahoo! Group or how to get in touch with them? Just look down the line, and you’ll see the listing of group moderators with their Etsy URL listed so you can convo them at any time.
