Introduction

Welcome to Release 2010 of PGI Workstation and PGI Server, a set of Fortran, C, and C++ compilers and development tools for 32-bit and 64-bit x86-compatible processor-based workstations and servers running versions of the Linux, Windows, and Mac OS operating systems.

All workstation-class compilers and tools products from The Portland Group (PGI Fortran Workstation, for example) are subsets of the PGI Workstation Complete product. These workstation-class products provide a node-locked single-user license, meaning one user at a time can compile on the one system on which the PGI Workstation compilers and tools are installed.

PGI Server products are offered in configurations identical to the workstation-class products, but provide network-floating multi-user licenses. This means that two or more users can use the PGI compilers and tools concurrently on any compatible system networked to the system on which the PGI Server compilers are installed.

Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) no doubt has high hopes for Windows 7, launched Thursday, but the new operating system might also have significant long-term implications for the security industry, experts say.

So far, Windows 7 has left the gate with a strong start. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told analysts, partners and media attending the Windows 7 release party in New York that, so far, 45,000 retailers are currently selling the new operating system, and he said he expected 300 million Windows-based PCs to be sold this year.

Despite the promising launch, Microsoft still faces a slew of hurdles with Windows 7, not the least of which were the poor performance and dwindling adoption rates of its predecessor, Vista, released in 2007, which critics disparaged as clunky, slow and overburdened with unnecessary features.

Overview

Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) brings Amazon EC2-like infrastructure capabilities inside the firewall. The UEC is powered by Eucalyptus, an open source implementation for the emerging standard of the EC2 API. This solution is designed to simplify the process of building and managing an internal cloud for businesses of any size, thereby enabling companies to create their own self-service infrastructure.

As the technology is open source, it requires no licence fees or subscription for use, experimentation or deployment. Updates are provided freely and support contracts can be purchased directly from Canonical.

UEC is specifically targeted at those companies wishing to gain the benefits of self-service IT within the confines of the corporate data centre whilst avoiding either lock-in to a specific vendor, expensive re-occurring product licences or the use of non-standard tools that aren’t
supported by public providers.

Rumors regarding a possible operating system by Google have been floating around the Internet since… well, pretty much forever (or at least a couple of years), the whole world expecting the search engine giant to tackle this field as well, especially after releasing the Android operating system for mobiles. These speculations became even more intense this year, when Google acknowledged the fact that it was actually working on an OS designed mostly for the netbook and ultra-portable segment and built around its own browser, the Chrome OS.

In any case, things became a lot clearer yesterday, when Google unveiled a few more details regarding the development stage of the Chrome OS, as well as what we should expect from it from the point of view of the user experience. And to sum things up, we’ll talking about “cloud all the way,” since the operating system from Google will rely heavily on the company’s numerous online applications, practically turning the computer it’s installed on into a cloud client.

Most donated organs come from people who die from a severe brain injury and who receive treatment on a ventilator in an intensive care unit. The brain injury damages vital centres in the brain stem which are essential to maintain life. No one can live once these centres have been destroyed. Tests can show conclusively when this has happened.
